For those who have been learning Mandarin using the Hanyu Pinyin system, making the switch to POJ for Taiwanese can be confusing. The existing systems all have their own specific flaws and problems, all of which led me to create an adapted version of Hanyu Pinyin for my own use. I have been asked by a couple of correspondents to explain the system, which I will do in more detail shortly. For now you can view the link at the bottom of the page for a comparison with other systems.

Of course, it is the height of arrogance to think that I could do better than all the linguists who have devised romanizations in the past, but I would say in my defence that this system suits my needs better than any other. I find it more intuitive and more efficient, but that is doubtless because I have spent years working with Hanyu Pinyin for Mandarin. I will not promote it beyond saying that other 'switchers' from Mandarin may find it useful - it certainly is not used anywhere else. POJ remains the system that most people use and that I recommend.
